Jon Stewart Inflicts Discomfort on Cliff May

Jon Stewart of the Daily Show interviewed Cliff May yesterday. Below you will find the full interview which is some what funny, yet makes one realize how far the Bush Administration have gone in justifying "torture".

I like Jon Stewart and his funny approach to politics. But most importantly, I enjoy his logical thinking which makes most people pause, using cleaver tactics of humor! Of course it is easier to swallow difficult subjects such as torture and war via humor and jokes...

Voice of a Dissident!

I am sure most of you have seen this particular poster of President Barack Obama, but have you ever wondered who actually drew it? We see certain images everywhere in our daily lives but we never stop for a moment to ask the roots of those images and where they come from. We are so busy with our daily routine that those images fade into nothingness after a few days.

Here is an interesting artist I would love to introduce to your taste buds. His name is Shepard Fairey. He started his artistic career as a nobody, doing art in the streets of Boston, but slowly became recognized for his work. After the famous poster of President Barak Obama, he became recognized worldwide. Now his paintings can be seem in art galleries in various parts of the country. If you read his autobiography, you can see his fighting spirit is still live and kicking. He maybe recognized as an established artist, but that doesn’t mean he gives into the pressures of the current political climate.

Against all odds, if an artist can voice their opinion against oppression and injustices, then s(he) has my respect…

Above is an amazing poster done by him depicting a Palestinian women looking through the wails of oppression. A picture tells a million words!

On a personal note, I want to see such artists in Turkey, portraying the suffering of the indigenous Kurds. Separate from the atrocities committed by the terrorist group PKK, separate from the political voices of the establishment everywhere, separate from the hate mongers, separate from the political bias on all sides....

Just simply depicting human suffering. After all, pain is universal!

Esref Armagan: A blind man who can paint...

Esref Armagan is an amazing painter who lives in Ankara, Turkey. I have heard of him through my brother, who bought one of his paintings a few months ago. What is amazing about this man is that, he is blind from birth, yet can draw pictures with amazing vivid colors and perspective. His drawings are beautiful, bright and express a lot of emotion. He first imagines what he will draw completely in his head and transfers it on to paper.

At the Harvard Medical School, scientists’ are totally mystified by Esref’s abilities. What neurologist are particularly curious about is, how can he understand depth, scale and able to draw 3-dimentinal pictures without ever experiencing the world with his eyesight?

Esref agreed to take part in an experiment in Boston; After an MRI brain scan, what scientist found was ground breaking. Vision is not only about interpreting the world though our visual ability but it is also about our understanding of “space”. Basically, vision can also be interpreted by “touch”. So our fingers can create visual ability in the same way as a person born with regular eyesight.

What this amazing artist wants to be remembered is not by his ability of drawing pictures as a blind man, but rather be remembered for his ability to paint beautiful pictures separate from his disability.

Watch this short 10-minute documentary by Discovery Channel about Esref Armagan when you have the time. I can assure you it will bring tears into your eyes. It is a humbling experience!

I am a very proud mother!

Today in the afternoon, my daughter entered 25 meter free style swimming competition for 9 year olds. 70 children of the same age group entered it from different parts of New York City. More then 800 children of ages between 7-15 years competed against each other. They divided the girls and the boys and each to their own age group.

She swam in 17.67 seconds and came in 4th place out of 70 girls! There were literally few seconds difference between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place. It was extremely close.

I am so proud of her.... GO LARA GO!!!! I just wanted to share this good news with you all....

I told you SUN has something to do with positive energy... And thank you Sean for blowing good wishes my way...

Finally Spring Has Arrived to New York City!

After a gruesome few months of being stuck at home with cold, snow, rain and dark..... finally today I will be feeling the sun on my face and warming my bones! YES! You heard it right, the spring has arrived to my beautiful city. Colorful restaurants and cafe's will be full of people sitting outside, with lighter cloths, lighter shoes and lighter minds. Something about the "SUN" that gives us, humans, positive energy and a sense of power. I can visibly see the change just walking around in the streets.... how incredible!

Have a wonderful and peaceful weekend.

Consuming kids: The Commercialization of Childhood

As a follow up to my previous post, "Commercialization of Chidren....?", I decided to post a 3 part video, a fellow blogger, C'est La Craic directed me to.

This informative video pretty much encompasses everything and more than what I try to convey in my previous post. When you have the time, please watch the video.

"Consuming Kids throws desperately needed light on the practices of a relentless multi-billion dollar marketing machine that now sells kids and their parents everything from junk food and violent video games to bogus educational products and the family car. Drawing on the insights of health care professionals, children’s advocates, and industry insiders, the film focuses on the explosive growth of child marketing in the wake of deregulation, showing how youth marketers have used the latest advances in psychology, anthropology, and neuroscience to transform American children into one of the most powerful and profitable consumer demographics in the world. Consuming Kids pushes back against the wholesale commercialization of childhood, raising urgent questions about the ethics of children’s marketing and its impact on the health and well-being of kids."

If you can, watch it with your children.

Commercialization of Children...?

Are you a mother or a father of young children or teenagers? Are you thinking about starting a family, growing in size? Are you wondering how we became caught up in “consumerism”? Do you feel our capitalist system is over burdened and obsessed with spending, spending, spending? Then THIS article is for you! Please read the brilliant article written by Henry A. Giroux, who has written numerous articles and books dealing with the issues facing us today?

I must admit, I was some what taken back after reading this important and informative article about how our children, from birth to teenage years are brainwashed to become consumers. The gigantic advertisement and marketing industry spends up to 17 BILLION DOLLARS a year in shaping children’s identities, fears and desires.

We are living in a society where ones success and/or failure are judged through the lens of economical standing. We must first look at how adults came to be consumer freaks that judge themselves with outer appearance through financial wealth only? The roots lie in our childhood….

Children from day 1 are bombarded with logos, images, characters, brand names which define, how cool, funny, witty, confident individuals they perceive themselves to be. Disney, Nickelodeon and other mega companies now provide web sites, luring them into virtual world of potential consumers. Children visit stores and malls long before they enter elementary school.

But there is more at stake here then just simply making money for these companies. Children are increasingly viewed by co-operations as commodities, products or consumer slaves. Co-operations like Disney not only have huge economical power but also have enormous political power. They funnel unprecedented sums of money to political parties and officials, which in return create and regulate laws preferable to them. In a way, these multi billion dollar companies have colonized the consciousness of the daily lives of millions, not only in this country, but also around the world. They are shaping the future generations of how and what they will feel and think. These companies have hijacked the conscious minds of our children in order to keep the perpetual cycle of consumerism.

This article is a must read for those who are the next generation or bringing up young minds who will be the lawyers, doctors, teachers, nurses, policeman/woman, policy makers, congressman/woman, professors in our universities and many other important positions in our societies. We must be aware parents, who should at least try to control to some extend, how much TV our children are watching, how many hours are spend on video games or how many useless toys do they have lying around our homes. We should as parents, try to instill some kind of self control in our children where they have the ability to say “No” to many products that are useless, which become clutter after some time. They should be able to limit their wishes and desires to some extend. They should grow up to become mature adults, where consumerism and monetary wealth should not be the most important goal in their lives.

Basically what I am trying to say is, criticizing the market, co-operations or just simply pointing out to the commercialization of children is not enough. Denouncing the market society does NOT go far enough in fixing the future of our children. What is equally necessary is developing public spaces and social movements that help young people develop healthy notions of self worth, identities and visions of their future no longer defined by market values. We as parents must take the matter into our own hands in promoting and creating the right environment for our children to strive in.

I know it is not an easy task. I know it can be time consuming and requires a lot of energy on our part…. BUT it is not impossible!

A little Advice!

When my children were in 1st grade, just learning to read and write, I decided to inspire them with poetry and bought them bunch of poetry books specifically designed for children. There is a poetry appreciation center in the Greenwich Village area of New York City, which I visited a few years back and got tons of ideas and book suggestions from them.

Mary Ann Hoberman was one children’s poet that popped up in the conversion and was highly recommended. So I bought her “The Llama Who Had No Pajama” poetry book. I must confess I loved it much more then my children. It’s witty, smart, cute, funny and very educational. Time and again, I pull out these poetry books from their bookshelf and read it to them or to myself when I am in the mood.

Here is a little advice for children and adults a like….

Advice

If you’re sleepy in the jungle
And you wish to find a pillow,
Take a friendly word for warning:
DO NOT USE AN ARMADILLO!

Though an armadillo often
May roll up just like a pillow,
Do not go by his appearance
But go by with ample clearance.

For an armadillo’s armor
Is not suited for a pillow,
And an armadillo’s temper
Only suits an armadillo.

If you use him for a pillow,
Then beware of what will follow:
He may slip out while you’re sleeping
And an arm or two he’ll swallow.

(And any beast that leaves you armless
Can’t be classified as harmless!)

Nor will he beg your pardon
For his thoughtless peccadillo;
So the next time you go walking in the jungle
TAKE A PILLOW!

Mary Ann Hoberman

Don’t you just love it?

My take on Religion and God...

I am back from my long weekend in Boston. It was wonderful to get away, even if it was only for a few days. In short, it’s back to my usual analysis of the world….

Last week, millions around the world celebrated Easter; sermons, speeches and various other rituals were part of the usual cyclical behavior which humans find comfort in. I was thinking about religion this morning and decided to write a few words. Here is my take on it: As some of you know, I find it hard to follow any type of religious act or ritual that involves me in believing in the supernatural strength of a very unjust “God”.

My take on it is that, religion is basically a cluster of information collected over time and passed on from generation to generation, which has had little or no “positive” effect on the individual per say. Let’s face it, it’s a man made concept that has played an overwhelmingly negative effect on the human race through out history. I came to that conclusion simply because, of the absurdity of the belief system. Religion assumes the position of the existence of a supernatural figure who created a very imperfect world with imperfect creatures who strive to rid it’s self from the sins they were born with. If one looks at all 3 major religions (Islam, Christianity and Judaism), one can not over look the fact that “God” is overwhelmingly interested in “human sexuality” as well as, what can be eaten, when and for how long, what can (cannot) be worn and how and when to pray to the “Master”. Not to mention, Religion is quite oppressive and lacks respect for diversity as a human condition.

Horrible wars, crimes and atrocities committed in the name of Religion and/or God through out history. It was and continues to be used for conflict and cruelty, which stood against and continues to oppose liberal and progressive thinking. Let’s face it, the moment an ideology becomes a doctrine, it is bound to indoctrinate the masses. This is a very slippery road to bogus ideas and thought, such as, belief in the superstitious ideas that hold no truth and encourages only one way of thinking.

What amazes me is that perfectly educated and smart people fall for the falsehood of symbols and figures, which eliminates logic and reason. I cannot for the life of me understand why people fall for such mediocre superstitions, which has little “real” credibility.

I know I will get tons of negative response to this post, simply because I mock “Religion and God”. I wish people lived without the chains of superstitions to govern their lives, instead used reason and logic to enhance our world. One does not need God and/or Religion to be kind and respectful for one another, one does not need to be told not to kill or steal without the fear of going to a fantasyland called “Hell”. Kindness and generosity can be conducted with reason and a strong sense of justice.

I wish we could take the power away from the Churches, Temples and Mosques and give it to its rightful owners, us the people!

I am off to Boston, MA

Schools are out due to Easter for about 12 days… I love breaks as it gives both my kids and me time to recuperate and energize from our hectic lives. I thought I would take this time to visit friends and family in Boston.

This Saturday night, I made plans to go to my favorite seafood restaurant, The Daily Catch, situated in the Italian district of Boston (The North End). It is your typical family run restaurant. When you get seated, the owner usually greets you with a huge smile and chats to you causally like you are family. The seafood is just amazing and of course the red wine selection is to die for. My favorite dish is the classic pasta with lobster, calamari, clams, scallops, shrimp and mussels, cooked in a wonderful red sauce.

When you walk in, do not expect much ambiance as it looks kind of dull but people do not line outside for the appearance but rather for the food and the family feel to it. I am not kidding, even in 20 F, the line can be long. I have known to wait up to half hour in the freezing cold.

Here is a link to The Daily Catch. If your path ever crosses the North End in Boston, make sure to visit this amazing restaurant. A little warning, you cannot make reservations a head of time, so expect to wait outside. But hey, it might be a great way to meet some Bostonians.

A little tip: After your wonderful diner, pop over to Caffe Vittoria right across the street and have their wonderful Italian Coffee and taste their mouth watering deserts. One needs to digest, right!

For those of you who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter!
As for me, I will be stuffing myself with great food and red wine….

One of the great reporters of the 21 century, I.F Stone said: “All Governments Lie”….

PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO

On April 3rd, Bill Moyers interviewed Glenn Greenwald and Amy Goodman about the state of the cooperate media in the US. I utterly enjoyed watching these 3 great journalists discussing the history of journalism and what it means to the public today. If you have about 5 minutes to spare, please watch their eloquent analysis of how corrupt and embedded journalism has become over the last decade. They are all pretty much outside of the planet Fox, CNN or MSNBC. They are never invited to speak in any of these TV stations, we never hear what they have to say about issues that are important to us and we never read their op-ed in newspapers like New York Times, or Boston Globe.

In Turkey, journalists or writers who oppose the political elite are unfortunately silenced either by death, prison or exile. Here in the US, it’s done in a much more sneaky and a smarter way. Not on your face like Turkey, so to speak. The system silences journalists by not including them into the main street media. They are never invited to the Democratic or Republican conventions, they are never invited to speak on issues such as Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, health care and many other issues Americans care about. Simply because, they go against the herd, their voice criticizes the status quo and the establishment. This is where I am going to say the cliché of “George Orwell rolls in his grave”.

Amy Goodman said it wonderfully: “The way the current media works is that, they show the spectrum between the Democrats and the Republicans, often that is a very narrow point of view. As journalists it is our job to bring you, the public, various points of view, which fall outside of that particular spectrum. Our job is to open up the issues that the American people care about, like wars, health care, bailouts etc… For example, the corporate media is failing the American people again, by not asking the right questions about the expansion of the war in Afghanistan, just like they failed the public during the lead up to the war in Iraq.”

We must inform ourselves and be equipped to question the rhetoric as soon as we see it in our TV screens or Newspapers. Please watch the video when you have the time. It is well worth it!

1968

I would like to introduce my parents to you. That’s my mom, dad and me in the middle. They look so young, beautiful and in love. I love the tranquility of the background and the innocence of the picture. Of course I love this particular picture, because it’s my family and me. When I look at old scanned photos, I feel like it gives a glimpse of history; it was the year of flower power, hippies, Vietnam War, Cold War, the Beatles, lots of drugs, protests and activism. It was also the year when Civil Rights movement leader Martin Luther King was shot dead on 4th of April 1968... (tomorrow, 41 years ago)

I would like to dedicate this post to one of the most amazing man in the history of United States. I commemorate his life and his untimely death by posting his most famous speech, I have a dream...

Never Let The Past, Slip Away!

A quote from Voltaire

I was surfing the Internet and came across this poster. I loved it and wanted to share it with you.

Voltaire said: Those who can make you believe in absurdities, can also make you commit atrocities...

(Voltaire was a prolific writer and philosopher, who lived in France between 1694 and 1778. He was an outspoken supporter of social reform, despite strict censorship laws and harsh penalties for those who broke them. He frequently criticized the church dogma, which can be seen, in his essays and various writings.)

It seems to me, history just keeps on repeating itself over and over again, like a caged hamster stuck inside a wheel. There are those who always try to oppress the masses for tighter control and there are those who always speak out against oppression. It is a never-ending story... I am not sure if this cycle will ever end but it seems to me, either this dilemma is part of our genetical make up or humans are pretty dumb over all...

Personally, I think humans are (for the most part) pretty stupid! I know it sounds quite pessimistic, but when one quickly glances over history, it is not that hard to see there is ZERO learning process. Atrocity after atrocity is committed not only against one another but also against animals and the environment. Humans have no self-control, no respect for others and no remorse for their horrendous actions. Otherwise why would we see so much pain and suffering over and over and over again in our history books?

While I commend on those who speak out and fight back against injustices and oppression, I can not stop wondering, why those who are on the side of peace never seem to be the majority where they have a bigger impact on the masses? It is always those who are warmongers that are the loudest and the more prominent figures whom the masses follow… Why does “war talk” seem more appealing? Is it because “fear” is such a prominent instinct that, people will do anything to save only “ones self”?

Imagine…. just one poster I came across on the Internet made me ask all these questions.

Actually, all I want is to give my children the right values so that they will stand for peace and never become followers. They will question their government’s motives and not become just a number. In short, as Voltaire said, hopefully I can instill the right values so that my children will not believe in those who will try to make them believe in absurdities so that they will never commit atrocities!
