White Phosphorus concerns after US air strikes in Afghanistan

It is sadly official. Afghanistan is Obama’s war. During his campaign, Obama promised to reorient from Iraq to Afghanistan and it seems he kept his promise.

After 9/11 the US government assumed the responsibility of changing and determining the faith of many nations around the world. Obama is steadfast in following in the footsteps of the Bush Administration by not only withdrawing out of Iraq immediately but also by expending the wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan. How long can the people in the US and in other parts of the world go on like this? Isn’t the pain and suffering of everyone on all sides enough?

To top it all of, I have read yet another sad news about the possible use of white phosphorus on the civilians in Afghan villages via air strikes. How can the US government expect the people on the ground to support the US troops, while their children and families are burnt, killed and inquired? Aren’t indiscriminate killings the behavior of the Taliban? The exact “evil” Bush/Obama administrations were and are fighting to eradicate!

Quite honestly I am confused…. I want to believe in the good of the people, I want to believe in the good of nations around the world… But how can I when I read such horrendous news about innocent children being burnt to the ground.

I am a mother and my heart bleeds to see such images of children in so much suffrage. Think for a moment if it was your child? Your neighbor’s child? Or your child’s child? How angry and disappointed would you be with the people who are supposedly trying to save you from the evil of Taliban but are behaving exactly the same way as them? Think how desperate and angry you would feel….

I plead with Obama and ask him to withdraw out of Iraq and Afghanistan immediately. I ask him to see the human suffering on the ground. I ask him to feel the pain of his fellow wo(men) and children…

The dire situation in Afghanistan is of no concern to politicians.
Firstly those people were invaded by the Russians and now the Americans.

The use of White phosphorous is called, “Liberating a country and bringing freedom and democracy to its people.”

I fear with the generations which fought WW2 gradually leaving this world, only a minority of the western people truly understand the sheer horror of war.

The escalation of and justification for the war on the Afghan people is so similar to that of Vietnam in the Kennedy presidency, even the language is similar.

Those who claim this war must be fought to protect the West against islamic terror, are putting the cart before the horse. For it is western army boots and missiles on Afghan and Arab streets that acts as the best recruiting sergeant for the islamic fundamentalists.

Ardent, it is quite sad how certain powers have actually used this myth of bringing "democracy and liberty" in the past before.... European powers went to Africa and used a similar myths; "Bringing civilization to the uncivilized world".... The name changes but the actions are always the same!

Mick, you are absolutely right. The western world have forgotten what it means to suffer from war and it's horrible effects on the public. :( I hope we will never experience it, however, we must not close our eyes and ears to the horror just because we are not living it now....

My brother fought in WW2 for 5 years. I was a very young child when he returned. As I was growing older, I kept asking him questions. He never said much about his experiences. He would just repeat, again and again, "It doesn't matter who is right, or who is wrong. War is hell for everybody!"

In the centuries before, wars were fought on battlefields. The leaders who started the wars were at the head of their armies, exposed to the same dangers.

Today, they are safe, in a room with maps, to decide what the targets will be. They seldom see the human faces behind the casualties. Even of their own soldiers. And the battlefields are now cities and villages, everyone(even a child) suspected to be the enemy.

In the name of our suffering humanity, when will our leaders (from everywhere in the world) stop butchering us? After all, want it or not, we are the keepers of our brothers. Thou shall not kill...

Thank you for the space, Nevin. :)

Claudia, I agree with your brother.... Wars are devastating for everyone. There are no losers or winners.... there is just pain!
