One of the great reporters of the 21 century, I.F Stone said: “All Governments Lie”….

PLEASE WATCH THE VIDEO

On April 3rd, Bill Moyers interviewed Glenn Greenwald and Amy Goodman about the state of the cooperate media in the US. I utterly enjoyed watching these 3 great journalists discussing the history of journalism and what it means to the public today. If you have about 5 minutes to spare, please watch their eloquent analysis of how corrupt and embedded journalism has become over the last decade. They are all pretty much outside of the planet Fox, CNN or MSNBC. They are never invited to speak in any of these TV stations, we never hear what they have to say about issues that are important to us and we never read their op-ed in newspapers like New York Times, or Boston Globe.

In Turkey, journalists or writers who oppose the political elite are unfortunately silenced either by death, prison or exile. Here in the US, it’s done in a much more sneaky and a smarter way. Not on your face like Turkey, so to speak. The system silences journalists by not including them into the main street media. They are never invited to the Democratic or Republican conventions, they are never invited to speak on issues such as Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, health care and many other issues Americans care about. Simply because, they go against the herd, their voice criticizes the status quo and the establishment. This is where I am going to say the cliché of “George Orwell rolls in his grave”.

Amy Goodman said it wonderfully: “The way the current media works is that, they show the spectrum between the Democrats and the Republicans, often that is a very narrow point of view. As journalists it is our job to bring you, the public, various points of view, which fall outside of that particular spectrum. Our job is to open up the issues that the American people care about, like wars, health care, bailouts etc… For example, the corporate media is failing the American people again, by not asking the right questions about the expansion of the war in Afghanistan, just like they failed the public during the lead up to the war in Iraq.”

We must inform ourselves and be equipped to question the rhetoric as soon as we see it in our TV screens or Newspapers. Please watch the video when you have the time. It is well worth it!

It certainly is true.

On the weekend I was picking up some photos that I had developed at a local print shop owned by Chinese people. The lady was telling me that in China her husband was a news presenter and he was torn about all the lies he had to say on TV rather than the truth.

It not only happens in China, Turkey, U.S. but in every country. The Media heads work in with governments.

A journalist that I like, Patrick Cockburn, states that if he was to write the truth about what is happening in Iraq he would get his throat cut.

Like wise another favorite Australian journalist of mine is John Pilger. His works are printed in foreign newspapers. He writes some brilliant critiques but he has never been invited to write an Editorial in any Australian (Murdoch) newspaper.

The newspapers are now just willing to report the official line given by the government rather than allow or employ journalists to do any investigative journalism.

Very sad!

What is really interesting is exactly how this state of things came to be in the USA. Before Reagan, it was normal that, in order for a TV or radio station to obtain a license, it had to provide viewers/listeners with at least two sides of any issue. This really was strictly enforced. The station had to make a real attempt to be balanced. By deregulation by the FCC, step by step, the doors were open for media corporations to predominate and manipulate the news, and to dictate what constitutes news and evidence.
CNN has become a joke. It's like news for babies. Jim Clancy tries to "emote" all over the news all the time, which has become nauseating. Presumably, viewers won't notice how empty and weak the stories actually are if Clancy acts as if he is in a community theater production.

During last year's election campaign in the USA, the vice-president debates were held and Palin was declared the winner by all of Rupert Murdoch's newspapers. In fact, the script had been written PRIOR to the debates.

Fortunately, most Americans are becoming increasingly skeptical and distrustful of major news corporations. Deregulation is responsible for a lot of the messes you see in the USA at the moment, but it certainly created a lot of wealth for some.

Ardent: I love John Pilger. I read a book written by him called, "Freedom Next Time: Resisting the Empire".... He is amazing at showing, Emperor has no cloths on!!!
I have a lot of respect for journalists like him...

Nomad: I agree with you. Since Reagan, journalism has totally embedded it's self with the government and they lost all credibility in the eyes of the public. All I can say is, I hope the establishment will not get their long tentacles rapped around the Internet. Although they are trying damn hard!...

While Pilger can irritate me at times, he was responsible for a tv programme that kick started my interest in politics and world affairs. The programme was Cambodia: Year Zero

Jams, that was a good documentary for sure.... :)

How mainstream journalists become pliable tools is a long and thought out process. In the UK and Ireland they are not censored but learn to censor themselves.
As a journalist or producer moves higher up the career chain in an organization like the BBC or Guardian, those who question authority or hold radical ideas are slowly filtered out, until a survival instinct sets in when journalist understand what they can or cannot write.

MI5 had an office in the BBC until the 1970s which checked out all staff etc, now it is ridiculous to believe this does not still happen, for the British security services and police check out active trade unionists who work in certain industries/professions, so they are hardly going to overlook the media.
