Have a wonderful and peaceful weekend

I have decided, I will post a photo that I have taken, every Friday (if I can that is).
Why not combine my two passions.... blogging and taking photos...

This was taken from Buyukada (Turkey) over looking Heybeliada.... The boat is approaching Buyukada with utter calmness and beauty.
Buyukada is my home away from home... It is the place I spend my summers (2 months of the year) since my birth...

I think I am feeling home sick!

Have a wonderful weekend.

We climb AyaYorgi peak twice a day, you SeferOglu folk cannot do it. We locals stay November and May in Prinkipo.

An alluring and comforting photo.

Great to read neighbours having a conversation.

Alias, I took that photo last summer.. It was an extra ordinary sunset that particular day and I was lucky to have my camera with me... When you visit Buyukada, you must go to Ayayorgi like Yavrukuran says! It's a must!

Yavrukuran, I know what you are thinking, those Seferoglu spoiled summer vacationers.... I know.... I know... I heard it plenty of times... :)

I am so happy I have met another islander! Every year, I must light my candle at the Greek Church for good wishes, and I must drink their home made wine and most importantly, I must watch the sun set!

Ardent, Isn't the world small! :)

AyaYorgi peak is the highest point in Prinkipo. It is on the second hill. The monastery is built in 19th century on top of remains a holy ruin back from 10th century. It is a holy place for all religions. There is a ritual to climb and you should strictly follow the centuries old rules. It is 970 meters from the start point in lower end, the merry-go-round square. Once there was a merry-go-round fun place in the 19th century, which was demolished long ago but the name still stays. You start with a certain pace, slow but non-stop. You should not speak, talk to anyone. You will pray all the time while walking, for whoever/ whatever you believe in. Orthodox believers climb barefoot. It is 1700 paces for me from the starting point till the door of the monastery. It takes 15-17 minutes for me to climb. When you reach the upper point, take your time, change your t-shirt, bring towel and bottled water with you. Enjoy the view, sea of Marmara, sunrise in the morning or sunset in the evening. Light a candle in the monastery and pray to realize all your wishes. In the end you will feel relieved, comfortable, free from all your worries, family matters, global warming, financial crunch etc. Have some time, ask tea or Turkish coffee in the nearby cafe. You may also have country lunch, green salad and kebab with young red dry local wine, or local beer. While going back, you will feel refreshed and wish to come back everyday. It is daily rutin for me when I stay in Prinkipo.

Nevin,

Thank you for this post Nevin! It is one of my favorite destinations, although I haven't been fortunate to have lived there. My parents were from Cihangir/Friuzaga area, where I spent my childhood years.

As for Yuvakuran; thank you for the wonderful description of what to do when I get there. You are very lucky and fortunate to enjoy it on a daily basis. And if you guys are ever in the Southern California area, I'll buy you a drink...

Haluk, your depiction is so spot on! thanks....

TT, maybe we can all meet one day at Ayayorgi! :)

I have bonded with a few bloggers so far and wouldn't it be wonderful if we could make a date to meet at Ayayorgi... perfect place to meet! :)

That is such a beautiful sight. I wonder why I've never visited Turkey

I've not yet managed to make it to Istanbul, and all my Turkish time is spent much further south in the Mugla region which I love.

Lat year, over the course of two trips I spent 9 weeks over there. A group of us had made arrangements to fly up to Istanbul for a weekend but at the last minute my wife & I had to pull out - due to illness.

But one day, believe me, by hook or by crook I'll get up there to your favourite neck of the woods.

Incidentally, funny thing abouts "summer" isn't it? My brother & his wife and a few more of their expat Brit neighbours all come back to the UK for the summer months of July and August (particularly August) when it's just too darned hot ~ and humid.

Richard and Jams, please do visit this very unique and beautiful Island, tucked away from the noise and the pollution of Istanbul. If you ever stop by during the moths of July and August, I will take you guys out to my favorite place for some bear and fried muscles! :)

Summer months are not that hot in Buyukada (Prinkipo), in fact at times it can get a bit too windy... There are no public cars/motorcycles allowed and the horse carriages are utterly fun to ride if you are tourist. I do not ride them as I am a local... :) I use my legs to get around...
