Spigel On Line Writes... “Germany was in shock on Wednesday after a 17-year-old youth killed 16 people in a shooting rampage that began at his school, where he shot dead 10 pupils and three teachers. He later took a gun to his own head during a shootout with police. His motive remains a mystery.”
As most of you know, there has been several such sad events that has taken place in the past here in the US and apparently in 2002 a similar shootout took place in Germany, where 16 people were killed.
It saddens me to the core to read such depressing news. I am sad for the students who had to live through such horror, I am sad for the parents who are worried about the safety of their children, I am sad for the people killed indiscriminately and I am sad for the killer(s) who would find the need to go so far as to hurt not only others but themselves.
I have few questions; maybe you can help me answer them.
1- How or why do we have children so angry, so sad, so depressed that they feel the need to kill, rather then just sulk like normal children do?
2- Why do parents need guns hanging around the house? Being a member of a gun club seems so lame to me. Why not keep it in some safety box, where no child is even close to such dangerous weaponry. Let’s face it, guns are designed to hurt and kill others…
3- How can parents feel safe sending their children to school, when (seemingly) perfectly normal children go to such extremes?
4- What could be done to prevent it? I do not believe in prison like schools… pure security is useless.
5- What is wrong with our children? Why are they so angry?
If you know the answers to any of these questions, please help me answer them…

Nevin, my mum grew up on a farm and all the farmers had shotguns. Nobody thought to shoot another person. I do not think that the firearms are the issue.
After the Shooting rampage we had in Australia some years ago, the government quickly acted to make it illegal for people to own handguns and certain shot guns. But crime has not decreased, the crime rate has increased along with the rest of the world.
I hate to say this, but this killing spree sounds like a government sleeper in action, killing people then himself. I bet now the government will be trying to bring in gun controls.
Ardent, I am personally for gun control unless of course one lives in a farm where you absolutely needed a gun for hunting or self protection etc... In cities or towns, I do not see the need.
But you made a good point... gun control alone will not solve the issue. I believe the issue of child rage and aggression is far deeper then that. What child psychologists and social scientists need to do is, intensely analyze and try to understand the reasons why this is such an epidemic?
As a parent, and I am sure you feel the same way as a mother, it is worrying to know that there are children who are close to guns and feel the need to use it on others and then on themselves...
It is obvious to me, something is very very wrong here?
What makes a child so angry that he needs to go so far? My children, when they are angry with me or somebody else, they sulk! Maybe raise their voice a little but beyond that they just sulk and cry...
I just do not know the answers to these questions... but school sooting phenomenon is new... I wonder WHY? I just can not get my mind around this sad change in the teenagers psyche?
Some believe that childhood is like a nirvana, the easy years. In school children get into cliques, and create hierarchies. There is a peripheral group that feels left out.
Monitoring for signs of depression (anger turned inward) could help.
Looking for a rational answer about an irrational act, is hard.
There are some kids, with no conscience.
I am not for gun control.
And I believe that the government provided security may not be able to protect me from the nuts ...
who are the only ones who would still have guns when there's gun control...
gun control takes away the constitutional rights of people from the people...
there are far worse things us humans are entrusted with, and some among us abuse the privilege, but that shouldn't mean we should all be punished for it...
as for the 'cityfolk' who don't need guns; they have a right to not own any...
:)
You hear about these incidents just like you hear about plane crashes... It's all relative!
Renegade Eye, I guess you are right that some people/children have no conscience... but did they loose their conscience in the last decade all of a sudden? What I am trying to say is, school shootings are a recent epidemic.... There must be a reason behind it beyond the fact that some kids are evil....
And I do not know the answer to that but its certainly scary...
TT: you are such a libertarian... !
Nevin,
Thanks for the compliment!
:)
Who knows if gun control is the answer. It really depends in what type of society you want to live in. In the UK even the police (routinely) don't carry guns (unless specifically authorised) and the level of gun violence is low. It has been rising in the past few years, however, that is part of a general trend. It is still way lower than the US (after controlling for population).
That said, the UK had the Hungerford killing in the 1980s and also the one in Scotland at Dunblane. Both done by adults.
I don't think you can completely prevent these things happening and also it is not rational for us to get so worked up about it. It is horrible that it happened but the chances of dying in a car accident are still way higher (or thousands of other things). These events get a lot of publicity but when you calculate the probability of it happening then it is so miniscule as to make it inconsequential.
Btw Ardent - just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you :)
i think this is all a part of a society based on violence and oppression to begin with. how could events like this NOT happen?
video games, movies, government policy, media fear manipulations... many people's heads are so full of "society" that they don't know what else to do. when violence is happening anywhere, it affects the energy everywhere, at least to some degree.
policies and ideologies that accept violence as a given will ALWAYS feed the energy of violence, and it spreads further. when we learn to reject violence in a meaningful way, we'll see less and less of this.
i'm against gun laws... i think people should have them. but i'd also like to see us realize that we really don't need them afterall.
neo - "are you telling me that i can learn to dodge bullets?"
morpheus - "no. i'm telling you that when you're ready, you won't have to."
thanks Alias...
I agree with you... :)
Try traveling by plane. You never hear of planes landing properly all over the world in the thousands...
Don't try to ban airlines, or airplanes.
Just ban crying babies, kicking kids, imbecile parents, fat people, and middle seats.
Now that I've offended 5% of the population, I am beginning to like this democracy thing...
Now we know why the U.S. doesn't practice what it preaches... Democracy...
