Leftist Declares Victory In El Salvador Election

In El Salvador, leftist Mauricio Funes won the latest election ending two decades of conservative rule. In his victory speech he made clear to the public that he intends to uphold the moderate policies he rallied for during his presidential campaign and added that he will keep close ties with the United States America.

El Salvador has joined many of the left leaning governments that are sweeping South America like a breeze of fresh air. Even thought there are differences between Lula, Chavez and many others, there are still some common themes that have been emerging. Strong economic ties to each other have been the bonding point in the region. As Funes, many of these new governments are quite sympathetic or come directly from the leftist revolutionary past.

Like any government in the world, of course, I will keep my stance of skepticism. However, I am utterly enjoying Latin Americas shift towards the “left”. Why not? Obviously, "right" leaning governments in the past have done nothing to improve poverty or help with equal distribution of land for the indigenous population. If poverty can be lifted and wealth can be spread much more evenly among the population(s), then all power to them! One thing is true, it is the unprivileged and the poor of these countries who rallied behind and elected these man into power, including Mr. Funes. At the end, It is the will of the people…. !

I will end my post by Mauricio Funes words:

"This is the happiest night of my life, and I want it to be the night of El Salvador's greatest hope," he added…. "I want to thank all the people who voted for me and chose that path of hope and change."

Interesting news, indeed, Nevin. Don't know much, yet, and thus can't judge; however, if his deads will turn out to match his words, there might exist the chance for a change.
From what I heard, read and saw so far, he seems to make a positive difference to his colleagues in Venezuela and Ecuador. So, let's wish him well - for the people of El Salvador.

Last night the local FMLN supporters, had an election night event, with the El Salvadoran community here in Minnesota. There was food, dancing, phone calls to El salvador and watching TV from El Salvador on a big screen.

Funes was a news reporter. He has a softer charisma than Chavez.

People in El Salvador celebrated in the streets. There was plans for fraud, that were overturned by the vigilance of the masses.

On TV in some polling places, the votes with avatars by party, were counted on TV holding up each ballot.

Its a country where a big % of the people, live on $2.00/day.

I'm sure CAFTA, Iraq and crime are the big issues.

Renegade eye: Thank you for that input. El Salvador immigrants are among the largest (South American) community in the US, so it is definitely a cause for celebration for them.... let's hope it all turns out well.... :)
